Since, the World Wide Web has originated, there has been various techniques being used to index all the pages so that they could be found easily when ever required. Initially, the number of pages was very less on the internet and it was relatively easy to find them by using directories. But with the passage of time, the situation became intense and there was need of extensive search systems.

Until 1993, there were no specific search engines and directories were commonly used to search the pages. But the period of 1993 to 1998 can be termed as golden era of web because a number of search engines including Google were launched.
